Metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions (increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal levels of cholesterol or triglycerides) that occur simultaneously, or that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. If you have only one of these conditions, it does not mean you have the metabolic syndrome. However, any of these conditions increase the risk of having a serious illness. If you have more than one of these conditions, the risk may increase even more. If you have metabolic syndrome or any of its components, aggressive changes in lifestyle can delay or even prevent the development of serious health problems.
