Health before conception is the status of the woman before becoming pregnant. It means knowing how the health conditions and the risk factors could affect the woman or the unborn baby if she becomes pregnant. For example, some foods, habits, and medications can harm your baby – even before he or she is conceived. Some health problems, such as diabetes, can also affect pregnancy. Every woman should be thinking about her health before conception whether or not she is planning the pregnancy. One reason is that about half of all pregnancies are unplanned. Unwanted pregnancies are at increased risk of premature birth and low birth-weight babies.
