Many years of research have shown that addiction to any drug (whether licit, illicit or prescribed) is a disease of the brain that can be treated effectively. The treatment must take into account the type of drug used and the individual needs of the addicted person. For the treatment to be successful it may be necessary to incorporate several components, including detoxification, counseling and sometimes the use of anti-addiction medications (pharmacotherapy). It may be necessary to try several cycles of treatment so that the patient recovers completely.
