Prenatal genetic counselors collaborate with individuals, couples, or families that are more likely to conceive a child with a congenital defect or genetic condition. Women who are already pregnant or who are considering having a child in the future can meet with a prenatal genetic counselor to learn more about the condition in question, understand their risks more clearly, and discuss options for prenatal testing or assisted reproduction techniques, such as the donation of ovum or sperm.
During pregnancy, if the baby is found to have a congenital defect or a genetic condition, he or she may be referred to a prenatal genetic counselor. The counselor will help the couple understand the medical information, what to expect and how to prepare for the birth of a child with special needs, and will also discuss the couple’s options, such as termination of pregnancy or adoption.
